New update on KC Scout cyberattack says it will be 'months' before service can be restored

MORE THAN 24 HOURS LATER, THE KANSAS CITY SKY CAMERA SYSTEM WAS THE TARGET OF THE LATEST CYBER ATTACK. KMBC REBECCA GANNON IS LIVE WITH WHY GETTING THE SYSTEM BACK ONLINE IS SO IMPORTANT. REBECCA, CHRIS BRYA I DON’T KNOW WHO NEEDS TO HEAR THIS, BUT IN THE STATE OF MISSOURI IT IS ILLEGAL TO DRIVE WITH A PHONE IN YOUR HAND. SO THAT’S WHY THOSE SIGNS ARE SO VITAL. THEY COMMUNICATE SO MUCH INFORMATION THAT YOU WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO GET OTHERWISE. THINGS LIKE DRIVE TIMES OR ROAD HAZARDS OR YEAH, EVEN WEATHER HAZARDS. WHEN THE SIGNS WORK. SHANNON WISE DRIVES A LOT OF MILES FROM THEIR OIL, MOSTLY IN THE KANSAS CITY METRO. IT DOES PUT A CRAMP IN OUR STYLE, AND HE NOTICED THOSE BLACK SIGNS ON OUR MAJOR INTERSTATES FRIDAY. IT DEFINITELY HELPS. AND IT’S A SHAME THAT THEY’RE OUT. I HOPE THEY GET IT IRONED OUT HERE PRETTY QUICK. THOSE SCOUT SIGNS MAY SIT BLANK THROUGH THE WEEKEND, AND TYPICALLY THEY’LL HAVE ROAD HAZARD NOTIFICATIONS OR DRIVE TIMES LISTED. I DO NOTICE THE SIGNS A LOT OF THE TIMES, BUT YOU KNOW, TODAY I DIDN’T ACTUALLY SEE THEM. IT’S ACTUALLY KIND OF INTERESTING TO FIND OUT THAT THEY WERE CYBER HACKS, SCOUT SAYS. IT’S NEVER DEALT WITH A CYBER ATTACK BEFORE, DESPITE BEING A BASTION OF METRO ROADWAY KNOWLEDGE. I’M SURPRISED THAT THEY DIDN’T HAVE A WORKAROUND. IT DOESN’T KNOW HOW TO NAVIGATE THIS SITUATION SINCE THEY MONITOR ALL OF THE KC METRO. LIKE WHY WOULDN’T THEY HAVE A BACK DOOR TO BE ABLE TO GET IN AND GET THE SIGNS UP AND READY? ALL RIGHT GUYS, YOU CAN STILL ACCESS THE SCOUT MAP FROM YOUR COMPUTER, BUT THE BEST WAY TO GET AROUND IS ACT LIKE IT’S 1999. GO AHEAD AND USE THE RADIO IN YOUR CAR. It's not the update that motorists across the Kansas City area were hoping to hear.Officials with the Missouri Department of Transportation and Kansas Department of Transportation have issued a statement on the anticipated restoration of KC Scout after a cyberattack last week. Bottom line: This is going to take a while."It is too early to provide an estimate, but it is expected to be months before restoration can be anticipated," officials said in the joint statement. KC Scout is the bi-state initiative between MoDOT and KDOT that provides traffic information and services to the Kansas City metro area. A cyberattack on the service on April 25 took out the service's traffic cameras, dynamic message boards for travelers, and website. "The Missouri and Kansas Departments of Transportation understand this is frustrating to partners and the traveling public," officials said in Thursday's statement. In the meantime, officials emphasize that immediate and critical traffic information impacting the KC Metro is being shared through modot.org in Missouri and kandrive.gov in Kansas.
