Should you tip at Advance Auto Parts? ›

No, you shouldn't pay tip to the car technician or advisor after each servicing. At the end, you are paying to each and every person who worked on your car which one can check in the bill.

We offer a variety of free services at our stores. Stop by your local store for free engine code scanning on most OBD II vehicles! We cannot guarantee the problem can be resolved during the visit, but we are happy to refer you to one of our local professional technicians if a more comprehensive diagnosis is needed.

'Hard' vs. 'Soft' Codes

These concepts are still valuable for OBD II because they tell you how likely you are to find the fault during testing. A hard code is easy to measure because the fault is always there, but a soft code means you may have to recreate the fault conditions.

Some vehicles allow you to turn the Check Engine Light off without taking it in for a professional diagnostic, which is fine. However, doing so just to sell a vehicle under the pretense that everything is “fine” with it is fraud and that is a prosecutable offense.

How do I permanently clear my engine code? ›

Leaving the battery disconnected for a few minutes will ensure the vehicle systems will completely reset when you reconnect the battery. Secure the negative cable back to the terminal and cover it with the cap. Disconnecting the battery will clear the error codes and reset the check engine light.

All active issues will display as codes on your scanner. You can decipher these codes with your vehicle's owner's manual. When you're sure that the problem has been resolved, hit the Erase or Clear button to remove the code and reset your check engine light.

When your alternator begins to fail it can cause a variety of different electrical problems in your car, and eventually cause a breakdown. Alternators can go bad suddenly, or slowly over time.

Keep in mind, just because the Alternator tests fine, does not mean the system is fine. The charging system is composed of wiring that not only supplies the battery and system with DC power, it also “senses” the voltage that's out in the system in order to properly set the voltage leaving the alternator.

Re: Auto Battery Question

$5 is fine, but I usually feel $10 or more is appropriate. Not that I'm a big tipper but I figure they're not making much and tend to be nice and helpful. Interestingly, I had one guy gladly accept a tip and another installer (same store, different day) say they weren't suppose to take tips.

Meaning, US-based detailers will expect a tip, however, that does not mean it is mandatory, especially not if you are not happy with the end result. Most places aren't as big on tips as the United States, and detailers do not expect a tip, but at the end of the day, it comes down to personal preference.

Do you tip on top of 20% gratuity? Tipping on top of a 20% automatic gratuity is not required. The automatic gratuity is intended to cover the customary tip. However, if you feel the service was exceptional, you are welcome to tip additionally.
